ABC Experts Weigh in on the Superbowl Commercials

Bookmark and Share

Now that we’ve all recuperated from last Sunday's game (well some of us have at least), and the anticipation and hype of the Superbowl commercials are over, a few of us at ABC sat down and discussed what we liked and didn’t like about each spot. Sorry, call us dorks but we love this type of stuff! Overall this year there were a lot of great spots and certainly a wide variety of them to say the least. From an appearance by the lovely Betty White to peeing in pools, we wanted to share our thoughts on our top 3!

Dorito: "Great Dane"
Coming in first for so many obvious reasons and some not so obvious, is the Dorito dog murder cover up ad. This commercial features a dog, his owner and the missing family cat. The dog has apparently done away with his furry housemate and the owner becomes well aware of what has happened to the cat. There is a moment of panic as the dog realizes the owner has put two and two together as to the demise of the cat. The expressions on the owner and dogs faces are pretty priceless, and a series of briberies ensue. The hush money (bribe) of course being the delicious Nacho Doritos for the owner. Very clever indeed, and to top it all off the budget for this ad was a measly twenty dollars, all in part to a yearly contest that Doritos promotes to the creative public who want to submit their creations for this competition. Netting the winner a cool million dollars as the prize. Not too shabby for the winner or Doritos for the public awareness this has generated.

Kia: "A Dream Car. For Real Life"
The 2nd best Super Bowl ad was the Kia "A Dream Car. For Real Life" commercial. This ad featured a dreaming couple and one clumsy sandman. When the sandman accidently dumps most of his sand, the man who is sleeping starts dreaming in overdrive. It’s a montage of all things awesome including, Adrian Lima, Motley Crue, a bull rider on a rhino, and of course the new 2012 Kia Optima. At the very end, our hero jumps into his wife’s dream and wins her back from Prince Charming. The average football fan will love the High-energy rock and roll fantasy but the happy ending makes this a fun commercial for anyone watching.

TaxAct: "Free to Pee"
Coming in 3rd was an adorable spot created by an unlikely advertiser TaxAct with their "Free To Pee" commercial. This was the one that showed a young boys attempt to find an appropriate, or at least suitable, place to relive himself after playing in the pool. After many attempts to find that spot and being circumvented by big sisters, and tortured by such things as sprinklers and tea pots he reluctantly but satisfyingly decides to finish where he started… in the pool. And if his extremely satisfied smile did not make you laugh then the revenge taken out on his big sister by jumping in the pool next to him should have.
